The 32-year-old Schweinsteiger was quoted in the Chicago Tribune as saying: "Throughout my career, I've always sought opportunities where I hoped to make a positive impact and to help make something great".

Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reported the transfer was finalised, with the midfielder penning a one-year deal with the Major League Soccer outfit. Through my conversations with Nelson and Pauno (coach Veljko Paunovic) I'm convinced by the club's vision and philosophy and I want to help them with this project'.

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has called time on his unhappy spell at the club.

"Now we as a club need to rise to a standard that is set more internationally".

'Previously, I think we could satisfy ourselves with what is known domestically. The 2014 World Cup victor has made just four appearances in all competitions playing a total of 134 minutes of football.

They add that the deal makes him one of the 10 highest-paid players in MLS and includes an mutual option for at least one more year.

Rodriguez believes the club needs to rise to an worldwide standard and he hopes that the bank-breaking move for Schweinsteiger - and eight-time Bundesliga victor - will help in that regard.

"He can produce actions that few players in the world can do".

Schweinsteiger has one goal in all competitions for Manchester United, notching a goal in an FA Cup match earlier this season. The deep-lying playmaker finished his worldwide career with 24 goals in 121 caps, including six appearances as Germany won the 2014 World Cup.

Schweinsteiger, who made a name for himself as a member of the German national team and at German powerhouse club Bayern Munich, has been with England's Manchester United this season, but has scarcely seen the field under manager Jose Mourinho.

Chicago have finished on the bottom of the MLS' Eastern Conference the past two seasons.
