A close family friend of Mr McBride, who lived in Derry's Bluebell Hill Gardens close to Brandywell Stadium, confirmed the sad news that he has passed away, but was too distraught to speak any further. You'll be sorely missed.

The cause of his death is unknown.

McBride last played in City's 4-0 win over Drogheda at Maginn Park on Saturday.

McBride was a popular member of the Derry side, having spent his entire senior career with the club.

The 27-year-old defender is thought to have died at home on Sunday evening, according to reports.

Tributes were flooding in on Twitter from across the soccer community, from former and current teammates, other soccer clubs and hundreds of stunned fans.

Officials of Dundalk, Shelbourne FC, Cork City and Cobh Ramblers also tweeted their condolences.

Galway United midfielder Gavan Holohan wrote: "Can't believe the tragic news I've just heard about Ryan Mcbride. Thoughts with his family and friends".
