One man is in custody after he drove up to the checkpoint before the White House at 11:05 pm Saturday night, claiming to have a bomb in his vehicle, according to multiple reports by US media. Police identified him as William Bryant Rawlinson, 58, of Silver Spring, Maryland.

According to CNN, the Keoughan's claim just after 11 p.m. prompted an upgrade in White House security, the Secret Service said.

Several streets around the White House were closed in what remained an ongoing situation, CNN reported.

At the time, Tran was carrying a backpack with two cans of pepper spray, a book by Trump, a letter to the president and other items, authorities said.

The White House has a complex web of security in its different zones, with the system mostly relying on infrared and microwave technology to trigger alarms - but these can be subject to malfunction and false activation.

On March 10, a California man breached an outer perimeter fence and scaled a vehicle gate to enter the south lawn of the White House.

The man behind the barrier was "yelling nonsensical statements", a uniformed Secret Service officer said, according to the D.C. police report. Last May, a man named Jesse Olivieri from Pennsylvania brandished a firearm at a White House security checkpoint and was then shot and injured by the Secret Service before being detained.

A robot and a fully outfitted member of the bomb squad investigated the vehicle while the driver was taken into custody.

Earlier today, another person was arrested after jumping over a bike rack in an apparent bid to reach the fence outside the White House.

The auto was stopped at around 11 p.m.at a checkpoint about a quarter-mile from the White House, authorities said.
