Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established on June 14, 1949.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has berated the European parliament for passing a resolution condemning his plans to revive the death penalty for drug convicts.

"We will strengthen partnerships for positive change as we engage our region and our world", Duterte said during pre-departure ceremonies at the Davao International Airport.

Coming straight from a two-day visit to Myanmar, Mr Duterte's flight back to Manila on Wednesday will conclude his "introductory visits" to the Asean countries since he took office in June past year.

"I shall also meet State Counselor and Foreign Minister Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief of Defense Senior General Min Aung Hlaing".

Duterte fired his broadside in a late-night speech Sunday in Myanmar after the European Parliament issued a resolution last week condemning "the high number of extrajudicial killings" in Duterte's drug war.

During the trip, the Philippines president is also scheduled to meet representatives of the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Thai Bankers' Association, as well as Thai businessmen and members of the Filipino community at the Royal Thai Navy Hall. But as an Overseas Filipino Worker based here, he said he thinks it is very important that Duterte gets to "live with the expectations of everyone, not alone the Filipinos from the Philippines but also the Filipinos based in other countries".

Both Duterte and Suy Kyi have earned the ire of the United Nations body, with the Philippine leader being grilled over the summary executions in relation to his bloody drug campaign.

Teodosio said these impressions by the people from Myanmar make them feel proud to some extent.

Henry Lim, chairman of SL Agritech, a hybrid rice and seeds producer, said Myanmar is pursuing a more expansive technology demonstration of hybrid rice under a possible bilateral agreement with the Philippines.

"So when we heard he was coming, we didn't know how to react because we thought he had no chance to stop by Myanmar", he said.

"They contribute to the development of the economies of both the Philippines and Myanmar", he said.
