FBI Director James Comey confirms probe on Russian interference in USA elections

He made the claim two days after Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had met with Russia's US ambassador last fall, said he would remove himself from any investigation of Russian interference in the election.

The top two lawmakers on the committee said Sunday that documents the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation delivered late last week offered no evidence that the Obama administration had wiretapped Trump Tower, the president's New York City headquarters. That revelation shocked the United States, and has been credited with helping Donald Trump win the election and become president. The account says it is managed by Trump's social media manager, Dan Scavino. "We have no information that supports them".

In testifying before the House Intelligence Committee Monday, Comey cautioned against drawing conclusions from his decisions to not comment on certain topics.

Rooney went on to say the leak of the program would cause problems for Congress as it needs to reauthorize it per law in a few months.

Rep. Jim Himes asked Comey and Rogers about the White House, to which, Comey replied that it would be hard to comment without seeing the tweets, but Himes, a Connecticut Democrat, pressed.

"It was not our intention to say that today", Comey said, noting that the they have not been tasked with determining the effectiveness of Russia's efforts.

Comey responded, it's not "something that we looked at" as part of Intelligence Community review into Russian Federation cyberattacks, disputing the White House.

The director, testifying before a House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, also said that the agency was probing whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Mr Comey was testifying along with National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers, who also disputed allegations that surfaced previous year that British intelligence services were involved in the wiretapping.

On Monday, FBI director James Comey is due to appear before Nunes' panel, facing lawmakers seeking answers about the two scandals, which have dominated USA politics for several weeks.

The panel's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, told NBC's Meet The Press that Trump's wiretapping claims are "patently false, and the wrecking ball it created now has banged into" US allies, including Germany and Great Britain in recent days.

Nunes' committee is investigating whether the Trump campaign and the Russian government worked together to boost the real-estate magnate's chances of winning the USA presidency.

Trump's March 4 tweet about wiretapping, which was made without supporting evidence, pulled attention away from the claims of Russian interference in the election.

That answer was consistent with Comey's testimony throughout the hearing, in which he avoided discussing classified information, information about specific American citizens or information shared with the president. "The Department has no information that supports those tweets".

A White House official told CNN as the hearing was ongoing that "nothing has changed" based on revelations from Comey's testimony.

"James Clapper and others stated that there is no evidence Potus colluded with Russia", Trump tweeted Monday morning.

BASH: And again, that's another political point that the President and his allies on Capitol Hill want to press, it's not something that the NSA director can really address and he said I'm really not the guy to talk about this. Obama's Director of National Intelligence said so. "We take them at their word".
