Gophers men's hockey gets a No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament

The Irish (21-11-5) are the number-four seed in the Northeast Regional in Manchester, New Hampshire, and will meet top seed Minnesota (23-11-3) at 3:30 p.m. EDT Saturday in a regional semifinal game. Don Lucia's club will square off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Lucia's alma mater) in the opening round of the tournament.

The Bulldogs also received a No. 1 seed in the tournament this season.

Air Force advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years after a heart-pounding 2-1 win over Robert Morris on Saturday night. If North Dakota had won, the team would have been a No. 2 seed heading to a regional. The Red Hawks are playing the Cornell Big Red in the tournament. The two schools have not played against each other this year, but the Gophers have played the Irish in each of the last four seasons. They have some high end guys; an outstanding goalie in Cal Peterson and a very mobile defensive group. Ohio State lost in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament to Wisconsin over the weekend, 2-1. The championship playoff format involves four predetermined regional sites with four teams assigned to each site.
