Both MLAs separately confirmed to that Adityanath himself insisted on the need of two more able hands to assist him in governance of a vast state like Uttar Pradesh.

"Modi is saying India is a Hindu country and shall remain so", veteran journalist and commentator Shekhar Gupta told Reuters.

Known for his inflammatory speeches against Muslims, Mr Adityanath lauded Mr Trump for banning refugees and immigrants from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States, and said India needed similar action to check terrorism. "We will ensure balanced development of UP", Adityanath said in comments that assume significance as he is considered to be a hardline Hindutva mascot. BJP and its allies have won 325 seats.

"In the past 15 years, UP lagged in the race for development as previous governments indulged in corruption, nepotism and failed on the law and order front due to which people were affected", he said. "When U.P. develops, India develops".

Earlier today, Adityanath was summoned to Delhi on a special flight to meet Prime Minister Modi, but he returned to Lucknow without being able to meet the PM Modi.

Announcing the decision after a meeting of legislators in Lucknow, Union Urban Development Minister and Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the UP result was a "watershed moment" in the history of BJP.

The BJP, he said, had promised sabka saath, sabka vikas, and the fulfilment of that promise was in evidence at Sunday's oath-taking ceremony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Rajnath Singh, BJP chief Amit Shah and party veteran L.K. Advani were present at the ceremony, which was also attended by outgoing chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Yogi, the head priest of Gorakhpur Mutt, became famous for his campaigns of purification or "ghar ko Wapsi" (converting Muslims and Christians back to Hinduism), fuelling communal riots in 2007, threats to "kill 100 Muslims to avenge killing of one Hindu", "marry 100 Muslim women to avenge the conversion of one Hindu woman" and for his dedication to construct Ram Janam-bhoomi temple in place of the Babri mosque, which was destroyed by Hindu zealots to avenge Emperor Aurangzeb's religious excesses against Hindus' sacred places.

One of India's most prominent Muslim politicians, former Jammu and Kashmir state chief minister Omar Abdullah, said in a tweet that Muslims in Uttar Pradesh "must be terrified of what the future has in store for them".
