The goal of these tests is to allow each county to test the warning sirens in a simulated emergency situation and to provide the opportunity for businesses and schools to test their procedures for severe weather incidents.

An EF-1 tornado touched down in Waverly, an EF-3 tornado affected Appomattox County and another EF-3 tornado hit the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck region.

The drills will be held Tuesday, March 21 at 10:15 a.m. and 7:35 p.m.

The drill will start with a test tornado warning sent by the National Weather Service to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radios.

If severe weather threatens on March 29, the statewide drill will be postponed until March 30.

The 2016 tornado that hit Virginia Feb. 24 was the deadliest since 1959. It is similar to what people would see or hear during an actual tornado warning, officials with Fairfax County said. The National Weather Service (NWS) verified that eight tornadoes struck Virginia during that storm.

Bill Sammler of the National Weather Service said in a statement, "tornadoes can occur any month of the year".

They ask residents, business owners and local officials to use this an opportunity to practice where they should go if a tornado warning is issued. A tornado warning indicates a tornado has been sighted, and individuals should take cover immediately.
