FBI director James Comey has confirmed an investigation is under way into possible links between Russia and associates of United States president Donald Trump, as part of a wider probe into Russian interference in the presidential election.
House Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) and Ranking Member Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) speak with the media about the ongoing Russian Federation investigation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., U.S. March 15, 2017.
House Democrats on the panel hammered away on reports of the Trump campaign's communications with Russian officials as well as the President's tweets alleging his predecessor wiretapped his phone.
If Comey says Trump's wiretapping allegations are false, the Trump administration may then face questions about why they continued to double down on Trump's claim - going as far as to joke about it during a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday.
Mr Nunes said "numerous" current and former USA officials had leaked potentially classified information, and that his committee meant to identify them to bring them to justice.
"I know that is extremely frustrating to some folks, but it is the way it has to be for reasons that I hope you and the American people can understand", he said.
The US intelligence community has suggested that Russian Federation hacked the Democratic National Committee during the election to embarrass Trump's presidential rival, Hillary Clinton.
Comey, who announced that the FBI was investigating more of Hillary Clinton's emails days before she lost the 2016 election, said that the Bureau's practice "is not to confirm the existence of ongoing investigations, especially those investigations that involve classified matters".
Wes Hoolahan ruled out of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Wales
He thinks that he might be able to make it - that would be great if he can. He said: "Seamus has picked up a knock - it's precautionary".
It will be interesting to see if anything new comes from today's hearing.
Comey has taken his seat in what's expected to be an extremely consequential hearing for Trump's presidency.
The same hearing also heard no physical wiretapping was carried out on Trump Tower but it was possible "other surveillance activities" were used.
Meanwhile, Rep. Devin Nunes, the House Intelligence Committee chair and a Republican from California, said at the outset of the hearing that Trump may still have been the subject of surveillance during the election.
Monday's hearing, one of several by congressional panels probing allegations of Russian meddling, could allow for the greatest public accounting to date of investigations that have shadowed the Trump administration in its first two months.
Trump also tweeted that the "real story" is the leaking of classified information.
"James Clapper and others stated that there is no evidence POTUS (President of the United States) colluded with Russian Federation".
Five different congressional committees are also conducting Russia-related inquiries.
