Killing of Indian fisherman raised in Lok Sabha

Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody

Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody

The Sri Lankan government maintained that there had been no firing from their navy's side, Baglay said, adding that Colombo had agreed to investigate the case. Local fishermen alleged that he was killed by the Sri Lankan Navy while another was injured.

The move has come after Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that Sri Lanka will soon be releasing Indian fishermen. On Friday, the fishermen had threatened a state-wide agitation if action was not taken against Sri Lankan navy officer.

The death of the fisherman sparked protests from the community who demanded an assurance by the Centre on protecting their livelihood. Speaking at a rally in Tamil Nadu's Tiruchy on September 26, 2013, as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Modi had said the government's "soft" response was responsible for the incidents.

Members from AIADMK and DMK today raised in Parliament the issue of killing of an Indian fisherman allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy and asked the government to give a strong message to Sri Lanka.

White House defends budget cuts
As is becoming customary with this administration, the document billed as a budget is really more of a preliminary sketch. Corporation for Public Broadcasting: The CPB supports PBS, NPR, and public television and radio around the country.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan who claimed that almost 900 Indian fishermen were killed in the last 25 years, has urged the Centre to take steps to protect the rights of fishermen.

Tharoor said that Indian fishermen were also being arrested by Pakistan's Navy and recently, Indian fishermen were taken in custody in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) of Diego Garcia, an archipelago of 55 islands in the Indian Ocean south of India. However his "solution" that for the time being Indian fisherman can do fishing in Sri Lanka till India re-populates it's own area is outrageous.

The easiest way to "manage" the fishing dispute is for the Tamil Nadu Government and the Central Government to impound the bottom trawlers, increase patrols and arrest the Indian fisherman BEFORE they cross the global boundary.
