Police in Missouri confirmed that the musician passed away in a statement posted to their Facebook page. Chuck Berry, rock "n" roll's founding guitar hero and storyteller defined the music's joy and rebellion in his seven-decade career. His hits included Johnny B Goode, Roll Over Beethoven Sweet Little Sixteen, Promised Land, Rock n Roll Music, and Memphis Tennessee.

On Saturday, Chuck Berry was found unresponsive as his home west of St. Louis.

To celebrate turning 90, the rocker announced last fall he would release his first album in 38 years - "Chuck" - sometime in 2017 on the Nashville-based lable Dualtone.

The department added that Berry's family had requested privacy "during this time of bereavement".

Scores of rock legends and other celebrities sang the praises of Chuck Berry Saturday after the iconic musician died at the age of 90. "I am so sad to hear of Chuck Berry's passing".

Whatever the music was named, Bruce Springsteen, one of many artists heavily influenced by Berry, said the man was indispensable. The result was the rockabilly tune "Ida Red", which became a hit after it was retitled "Maybellene" and discovered by white audiences.

The internet reacted immediately, with famous fans from all industries expressing thanks, sorrow, and joy that Mr. Berry had lived a long and prolific musical life.

In fact, the list of legends Berry inspired reads like a "Who's Who" of modern music and includes names such as Smokey Robinson, Joan Jett, Bob Seger, Roy Orbison and Stevie Wonder.
