Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 33.20 or 0.36% at 9,126.85 with 31 components posting drop.

The barometer 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 29,653.54 points, provisionally closed at 29,518.74 points (at 3.30 p.m.) - down 130.25 points or 0.44 per cent from the previous close at 29,648.99 points.

Besides, sector-specific selling pressure, especially in Idea Cellular's stocks which plunged by nearly ten per cent following major merger announcements in the telecom space, hampered investors' risk-taking appetite.

At 10.40 am on Monday, the Nifty at the NSE was trading 40 points down at 9,120 while the Sensex at the BSE was trading 142 points lower at 29,507.

Indian shares followed Asian and European peers lower on Monday as oil futures extended losses on supply concerns and investors awaited a raft of speeches by Federal Reserve officials this week for clues about the global interest rate outlook. The S&P BSE mid-cap index was up by 0.17 per cent, while the small-cap index rose by 0.30 per cent.

The index had gained 250.88 points in the last two sessions.

Back home, the Rupee was trading nine paise higher at 65.48 against the US Dollar. Consumer Durables increased 150 points and Healthcare also rose 68 points.
