Suspect dead after opening fire at sheriff's station in Temple City

TEMPLE CITY Authorities believe a man who went to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Temple City Station to register as a sex offender exchanged gunfire with deputies early this morning before fatally shooting himself in the station's parking lot. Investigators were trying to determine what led the 47-year-old man to shoot at deputies in Temple City, about 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, then hopped into his SUV and kept shooting from the vehicle as the deputies returned fire, the sheriff said at a news conference. McDonnell says the man hopped into his SUV and engaged in a gunbattle with deputies from his vehicle.

Television footage showed members of a special weapons team in an armored vehicle approaching the SUV slowly. According to The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, it appears the suspect died of a probable self-inflicted wound. A shotgun was recovered from the suspect's vehicle and deputies said they believed there was also a handgun inside as well. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.

The incident began with a report of that shots had been at the sheriff's station by a gunman, the sheriff's department reported.

After a gunbattle that lasted several minutes, the sheriff's SWAT team arrived and surrounded the vehicle.

Nishida says preliminary information indicates there may be a suspect in a parking lot at the station.
