Syria fires missiles at Israeli warplanes on bombing run

"The next time the Syrians use their air defence systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation", Lieberman said on Israeli public radio.

That could make it harder for Israel to prevent weapons being smuggled from Syria to the militant group Hezbollah in neighbouring Lebanon, reported Bloomberg.

"Israel does not usually confirm or deny individual raids, but it may have been led to do so this time by the circumstances of the incident", Israeli worldwide news TV channel i24 News reported on the issue.

Palmyra, once held by ISIS and retaken by the Syrian government, is strategically important to both the regime and its opponents.

A statement issued by the IDF said only that "several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria" and that its "aerial defense systems intercepted one of the missiles..."

There has been sporadic cross-border fire between the two countries since the start of the Syrian war in 2011.

Israel fears that as the Syrian civil war possibly winds down, Hezbollah could receive a windfall in sophisticated arms from Assad and Iran.

Israel is believed to have carried out several attacks on Syrian soil in recent years, but usually refrains from confirming or denying reports on its alleged actions there.

Changes lie ahead for House health care bill
Critics say it would make health insurance more expensive for individuals, especially older adults and those with modest incomes. He also said that the Republican bill represents a "first step" and that additional measures can be expected down the road.

Syria accused Israel of supporting the Islamic State.

Israel has said it won't allow advanced weapons to reach Hezbollah.

In November 2012, Israel fired warning shots toward Syria after a mortar shell hit an Israeli military post, the first time Israel had fired on Syria across the Golan Heights since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

The pan-Arab Al-Mayadeen TV, which has good sources within the militant group, dismissed reports by other Arab media outlets that a Hezbollah commander, Badee Hamiyeh, was killed in one of the airstrikes.

It was another acknowledgment of Israel's ongoing operations in Syria.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi on Saturday called for United Nations condemnation of such brazen Israeli violation of Syria's territorial integrity, urging the worldwide body to do its utmost to restrain the Tel Aviv regime from repeating measures in violation of peace and security. "At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or aircraft compromised".

But it said none of those missiles had hit their targets. According to the report, Assayed was with the national defense militia, which fights alongside regime troops.

The soldiers fired back, triggering an exchange of gunfire.
