There are numerous ideological reasons to oppose the state's funding of arts, but the truth is that PBS gets only around 15 percent of its budget from the government; NPR gets 2 percent, though it might be more because it's hard to tell due to opaque budgeting. The American Nurses Association urged Congress to reject Trump's proposal, which they said in a statement will "weaken the nation's healthcare system and jeopardize the scientific research needed to keep America healthy".

President Trump's first pass at budget reform has his critics screaming - clearly, a good start.

The two sides have until late April to fund the government and avert a shutdown.

The blueprint pertains only to discretionary spending, and doesn't address mandatory expenditures like entitlement programs and interest payments on the debt. Yesterday, the White House released its first budget blueprint, also referred to as its skinny budget, and the consensus all around is that the proposed budget will not make America great again. It also includes a provision folding the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) into the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

But, the surprise is not just that so numerous cuts target areas that favor Trump, but they also target programs that have never been considered controversial, such as Meals on Wheels.

Trump's 2018 budget proposal calls for $25.6 billion in funding for the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

"We believe that this budget protects that core function of the State Department".

Mick Mulvaney told NBC television's Meet the Press Sunday that means "more money for defense, more money to secure the border, more money for law enforcement generally".

Week of hearings, testimonies and votes on agenda for Trump administration
Last week, they said they have seen no evidence for Trump's claim that Obama wiretapped him. That rift makes "a bipartisan, thoughtful, thorough investigation" essential, he said.

"Not just the compassion in terms of where the money goes but the compassion of where the money comes from".

In the introduction to his proposed federal budget, President Donald Trump states clearly that he plans to spend far less overseas and on worldwide issues than did previous administrations.

The governor's dismay with some of Trump's spending plans were shared by Bay State Democrats.

"The president's proposed budget reduction for agriculture does not work", Sen. BUT HOW WILL I SURVIVE ON THIS BUDGET? you may be wondering. Eliminating the program will "reduce complexity", the budget proposal says, and produce $732 million in savings. While Republicans control both the House and the Senate, history shows that for all their fiscal conservative talk, Republicans often are loath to actually cut the cord of federal spending.

Some programs are slated for complete elimination, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Community and Public Service, which runs AmeriCorps.

Includes eliminating the entire $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program.

The plan earmarks the new funds to accelerate the fight against Islamic State militants, reverse Army troop reductions, build more ships for the Navy and ramp up the Air Force - including by purchasing additional F-35 fighter jets, built by Lockheed Martin (LMT.N). And it would cut various family aid programs, such as Home Energy Assistance and Weatherization Assistance for low-income families.
