First tropical depression of the year forms in the Atlantic

The first tropical depression of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season formed on Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A depression has a cyclonic circular motion with surface winds under 39 miles per hour.

Murphy said the tropical depression is expected to weaken later Thursday.

So what does it matter that the system morphed from sub-tropical to tropical?

Technically, subtropical systems have their strongest winds further from the center and don't have a fully warm core. It now poses no threat to land, the National Hurricane Center said.

Britain's Theresa May announces shock elections on June 8th
May dismissed criticism of her decision to call voters back to polling booths for the third time in just over 24 months. Liberal Democrat leader Farron said that broadcasters should hold debates anyway, with an empty chair in May's place.

Subtropical Depression One has transitioned into a tropical depression.

While the system is projected to drift toward the north, it will not be a threat to land.

A tropical storm has winds ranging from 39 to 73 miles per hour that rotate around a well-organized center that contains showers and thunderstorms.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June 1 to November 30. Forecasters said no more strengthening is expected, and the depression should be absorbed by an extratropical low in a day or so. The 1992 cyclone was an unnamed subtropical system and the 2003 cyclone was Tropical Storm Ana.
