A 'trading disaster:' Trump slams NAFTA, repeats attacks on Canada's dairy industry

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton wrote to Trump last week urging him to uphold free trade, according to AP.

"Wisconsin and NY dairy farmers are only the first victims of Canada's illicit dairy trade restrictions", the two governors wrote.

"We're going to get together and we're going to call Canada, and we're going to say, 'What happened?' And they might give us an answer, but we're going to get the solution and not just the answer, because we know what the solution is".

"Our federal and state governments can not abide by Canada's disregard for its trade commitment to the United States, and its intentional decision to pursue policies that are choking off sales of American-made milk to the detriment of US dairy farmers", said Tom Vilsack, the former secretary of agriculture and current president and CEO of the US Dairy Export Council, in a statement earlier this month. "Included in there is lumber, timber and energy".

Ellis said dairy farmers are increasing their output even as there is a reduction in sales to Canada.

Trudeau's comments come two days after Trump promised US dairy farmers he would intervene to restore exports of American milk to Canada.

He says the USA now enjoys a $400-million dairy surplus with Canada.

There are pressures on the real estate market that need to be alleviated, but Ottawa must exercise caution because any measures it implements have a national effect, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday. "It's a disgrace", Trump said in the Oval Office, without elaborating on what he meant.

The specific program in question is the National Ingredients Strategy, a type of pricing program that gives incentives for Canadian dairy processors that steer them away from purchasing USA dairy products.

As he signed an executive order providing for a review of possible dumping of steel in USA markets, President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded new trade negotiations with Canada, charging American producers are being hurt in trade involving dairy, lumber, timber and energy resources.

Representative Tom Price held the seat from 2005 until he resigned in 2017 to become the Nation's Health Secretary. Senator Johnny Isakson, who represented the 6th from 1999 to 2005, and most recently, former Republican U.S.

"I do feel our country right now...really gets that this is a critical moment", Freeland said.

"We are going to defend our workers, protect our jobs and finally put America first", Trump declared, standing in front of an American flag fashioned out of wrenches.

Since the Trump administration took office, Canadian officials from all levels of government have made more than 80 trips to the USA and held more than 180 meetings - including a friendly get together between Trump and Trudeau in Washington in February.

It has no plans to change course, no matter how hard the US president tries to rock the boat.

While Canada and the US enjoy the world's largest bilateral trading relationship, with roughly $2 billion in goods and services crossing the border each day, disputes do boil over.

As for the visa program, Democratic lawmakers and organizations ranging from the pro-business Chamber of Commerce to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation say they welcome proposals to improve the visa program, though not always in line with Trump's ideas.

Luis Ribera, an agriculture economics expert at Texas A&M University, said that while the ultra-filtered milk issue may technically fall outside the scope of NAFTA, it is a sign of USA anger towards Canada's supply management system.

Another decision focusing on dumping, or whether Canadian lumber was sold into the U.S.at a price less than fair value, has been delayed until June.

"We've had a tough time on softwood lumber for 30 years".

Relations with the US are crucial as more than 75 percent of Canada's exports go to the USA, while 18 percent of US exports go to Canada.
