Brave Efforts at Vimy Ridge Remembered

As many as 25,000 Canadians will join Trudeau and other dignitaries as they pause in the shadows of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial on Sunday to reflect and remember.

More than 200 people attended the B.C. Dragoons' tribute to the Battle of Vimy Ridge at the Vernon cenotaph.

Around 20,000 Canadians made the journey to their country's memorial in northern France to mark the centenary, turning the former battlefield into a sea of the red and white of their country's flag.

"Many Canadians paid a bad price for this historic victory at Vimy, and I am humbled and honoured to be part of a company that has contributed so much to protecting the people and values we all hold so dear". Though it was led by British troops, it was mostly fought by Canadian forces.

The four-day battle was a decisive victory for the Allies and important in the development of Canada's national identity, as its troops attacked for the first time officially as the Canadian Corps.

According to the Vimy Foundation, 3,598 Canadian soldiers were killed during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The Last Post was played by a bugler using an instrument that had been sounded in the very area, as it had belonged to George William Shaw, a member of the Canadian Armed Forces who served at Vimy Ridge, and was loaned by his grandson. Prince Harry and Prince William placed the final pair of boots on a war memorial, and they all walked in the trenches the soldiers used during the war.

Angry opposition in the province of Quebec to the First World War and the military conscription that eventually came with it have receded into memory, just as Vimy Ridge has emerged as what most historians consider the seminal event of Canadian nationhood.

"These trees are direct descendants of acorns collected following the battle, and they will be planted in a circular pattern four deep to represent the four divisions". Let us remember those soldiers who sacrificed so much and let us strive always for a better understanding of our history and for peace.

In the century since, it's come to be seen as a defining moment in Canada's history, marking its emergence as a global power independent from Great Britain.
