Champs Élysées in Paris closed following reports of shooting

"The investigation has been entrusted to the Anti-Terrorist Section (SAT) of the Criminal Brigade and the Directorate General of Internal Security (DGSI)", Paris chief prosecutor's office said in a statement.

This raised concerns that a possible second attacker could be on the loose. There are also unconfirmed reports of another shooting victim, but it is unclear if that person was a bystander or another attacker.

A French police union had announced a second officer had died, but the interior ministry later said this was not the case.

The Champs-Elysees has been closed to vehicle traffic and all businesses in the area have shut down.

"A little after 9pm a vehicle stopped alongside a police auto which was parked".

He was also convicted in 2003 of attempted homicide in shootings on two police officers, according the AP.

France has been under a state of emergency since November 2015, when more than 130 people were killed in a single night by coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris. A French police union tweeted that an "individual in a auto opened fire at a police vehicle stopped at a red light, killing one policeman". "He parked just behind the van and he got out with a Kalashnikov and I heard six gunshots". Officers then shot and killed the assailant.

In a statement from its Amaq news agency, IS gave a pseudonym for the gunman, indicating he was Belgian.

The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State terrorist group (ISIS/ISIL). The Associated Press reported that on Friday French authorities searched a home believed tied to the attack. "The identity of the attacker is known and has been checked".

Paris police say officer and attacker shot, killed
One of the suspects had allegedly attempted to send members of Islamic State a video pledging allegiance or claiming an attack. French President Francois Hollande held a press conference after an emergency meeting with Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

There is a massive police presence on the Champs-Elysees and people have been warned to stay away from the area.

The incident took place on the Champs-Elysees earlier tonight.

"It's a very bad thing that's going on in the world today", Trump said, adding that he thought it was "another terrorist attack", though there has been no formal confirmation of that at this point.

Police had arrested two men on Tuesday in what they described as a thwarted terror attack.

A machine gun, two hand guns and three kilos of TATP explosive were among the weapons found at a flat in the southern city along with jihadist propaganda materials according to theParis prosecutor. "They need more than our compassion".

However, Belgian interior minister Jan Jambon told public broadcaster VRT that the man responsible for the attack was a French national.

The first round of the presidential race is scheduled on Sunday.

Conservative contender Francois Fillon, who has campaigned against "Islamic totalitarianism", said on France 2 television that he was canceling his planned campaign stops Friday. Far left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon said campaigning should continue.
