Dems launch pro-Ossoff ad blitz in Georgia

Because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, a special runoff will be held on June 20 between the top two: Karen Handel (R), who is pro-life, and Jon Ossoff (D), who is not.

Sanders, a self-declared socialist, became an influential voice in liberal politics after challenging Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary for president.

The White House said Wednesday that the Democrats "came up short" in Georgia's special election to fill the congressional seat vacated by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, calling it "a big loss for them".

Democrats heavily pushed Ossoff before Tuesday's vote, casting the race as a referendum against President Trump in hopes of turning the reliably red district blue.

Ossoff narrowly missed winning the election outright when he finished with just under 50-percent.

"We are changing the world and your voices are going to ring out across this state and country", Ossoff told his supporters.

"Dems failed in Kansas and are now failing in Georgia".

Democrats, searching for answers at a time when they are shut out of power in Washington, found a unifying figure in Mr Ossoff, a 30-year-old documentary film-maker who campaigned on a promise to "Make Trump Furious".

Republican Karen Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, lagged in a distant second, qualifying her for the runoff.

Special elections will hold particular importance for Democrats this year, as Republicans now control both the House and Senate. "It is now Hollywood vs. Georgia on June 20th", Trump wrote, alluding to celebrity donors to Ossoff. Ossoff will have to face Republican candidate Karen Handel in a runoff election in June.

"[She used] our tax dollars to pay for her luxury SUV then jetted around on our dime", the ad says of Handel's tenure as Georgia's secretary of state".

Ossoff benefited from a large Republican field of 11 candidates, some of whom emphasized their loyalty to Trump while others kept their distance.

Another congressional battle will play out late next month in conservative-leaning Montana, where voters will pick a replacement for Republican Ryan Zinke, who has become Trump's USA interior secretary.
