Feds look to establish cannabis tracking system in legalized regime

The administration has threatened to come down on recreational marijuana at a time when it continues to be legalized across the country.

Sixty-five percent think marijuana is less risky than most other drugs. And only 23 percent think legalizing marijuana leads to an increase violent crime.

The spread of drug addiction became a popular topic during the 2016 election. Ten years ago, only 32% of Americans favored legalization. Back in 1979, this poll found just 27 percent saying it should be legal. This would mark the first time marijuana would be legal in any form after being outlawed for almost 60 years. Even among those who think marijuana should be illegal, only half think the federal government should get involved with the states. Jeff Sessions, who is the Attorney General for the Trump administration, has called marijuana "slightly less terrible than heroin" and he once stated that good people don't smoke the plant.

For the past two decades, states and cities across America have legalized the use of marijuana for not only medical use, but recreational purposes. Since most financial institutions report to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which is a federally created entity, helping out a pot business with a loan, line of credit, or even checking account could be construed as money laundering. For now, though, it's highly uncertain whether the USA government will turn a new leaf in its views on marijuana. People who have tried or use marijuana are more likely to worry children will smoke cigarettes.

Eighty-eight percent of Americans, including those across the political spectrum, however, said they support allowing doctors to prescribe small amounts of marijuana to patients suffering from serious illnesses.

The proposal would make Canada only the second country in the world to legalize the retail sale and use of pot after Uruguay (medical marijuana is already legal in about 20 countries). Possession of marijuana charges made up 44 percent of all drug-related arrests that year.

Those are the findings of a new poll published by the Angus Reid Institute on Thursday as thousands were set to demonstrate in Canada and elsewhere in annual "4/20" events in support of marijuana legalization.

In the meantime, thousands of American lives are being incarcerated on simple marijuana charges every year.

There are partisan differences. Most Democrats and independents increasingly support legalization, while Republicans are divided on the issue. That adds up to 22 percent of Americans using marijuana, and 63 percent of those using marijuana regularly. For the cell sample, interviews were conducted with the person who answered the phone.

Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish using live interviewers.

US law enforcement agencies arrested 620,000 people nationwide for possession of marijuana in 2014, according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus four percentage points.

Though the semi-secret holiday's beginnings are rather hazy, numerous fact-checking departments from sources such as High-Times Magazine and Snopes.com point to a specific group of high school students from Marin County as the originators.
