This means they are looking at terror as a possible motive in the attack. The identity was not released.

According to the BBC, the gunman has been killed by police.

Police have also issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect in the shooting, according to a document obtained by Reuters.

Conservative contender Francois Fillon said on France 2 television he was canceling his planned campaign stops on Friday. The Tunisian-born French citizen was killed by law enforcement.

Candidate Emmanuel Macron also chimed-in. The two top contenders will advance to a runoff on May 7.

Police say the officer who was killed was in a vehicle which had been stopped at a red light by the attacker. In fact, he (the gunman) was hidden behind the van and shooting at the police. The Islamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police are reporting that there were at least two attackers involved in the shooting. One or several attackers have been shot dead by the police. "He shot straight at the police officer".

The officials had no other details about the attacker. He was shot to death after opening fire on a police van.

"Police officers were deliberately targeted", Henry-Brandet added. In 2015, six officers were killed by gunfire. The news agency says it appeared to be part of a follow-up police operation.

Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve tweeted: "Paying homage to the policeman killed on the champs elysees".

Jeremy Corbyn vows to tackle 'rigged system' in battle with 'Establishment'
This is further ahead of Labour than at any point in nearly a decade, and during Mr Corbyn's leadership. He made clear Labour's manifesto would be "fully costed and will be all accounted for and paid for".

But the 55-year-old said visitors to the city "were running, running... There were tens, maybe even hundreds of them".

Mr Brandet said a robbery may have been carried out at the same time as the attack.

It was unclear how Trump concluded that terrorism may have been a factor.

He said: 'First of all, our condolences from our country to the people of France. "It never ends", the President said. He says people must be strong and vigilant.

The incident came as French voters prepared go to the polls on Sunday in the most tightly-contested presidential election in living memory.

Officers could be seen forcibly removing innocent citizens from the area as they attempted to get them to safety.

Emergency vehicles blocked the wide avenue that cuts across central Paris between the Arc de Triomphe and the Tuileries Gardens, normally packed with cars and tourists.

Police authorities called on the public to avoid the area.

It is not yet known whether the street closure and the shooting are linked, but Police are warning people to stay away from the Champs Elysees area. "The police returned fire, killing the assailant".

French President Francois Hollande said he believes the incident is likely a terrorist attack.
