Gorsuch Takes The Bench With Show Of Enthusiasm For Debate

How a Supreme Court Ruling on a Missouri Playground's Funding Could Alter California's School Voucher Ban

US President Donald Trump nominated Gorsuch to take up the Supreme Court position in January this year.

"The court first heard a case that presented "a technical but important question about appeals from decisions by the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), which reviews federal employees" claims that they were wrongly fired, suspended or demoted".

Gorsuch fills a slot on the court that had been vacant since Justice Antonin Scalia's death in February 2016. Roberts said a few words to welcome his newest colleague to the court, telling Gorsuch that "we wish him a long and happy career in our common calling".

At another point, however, when Landau argued that his client was not asking the court to establish a precedent, Gorsuch interjected with, "No, just continue to make it up". He did not actively participate with the other eight justices in a private conference convened Thursday to reviewpossible cases.

Justice Clarence Thomas, in keeping with his customary practice, was the only justice not to speak or to ask questions during the oral argument. They declined to hear the long-shot appeal of a New Mexico lawyer who sued Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) over his refusal to even grant a hearing to Merrick Garland - the judge who might have sat where Gorsuch now sits had the election turned out differently.

"Visualized this way it's hard to see how the total number of charges might ever exceed the number of uses, carriers, or possessions", Gorsuch wrote.

The high court's ruling in the Trinity Lutheran case could have a widespread impact on the three dozen other states with similar provisions in their state constitutions, and the decision could be narrowly decided. And with that, Justice Neil Gorsuch's first case was over.

Patriots hit back at New York Times over White House tweet
Two players were brought to speak to reporters after the White House ceremony, but both said they had not known Hernandez. Few would label President Donald Trump as a sports nut, but his affinity for the New England Patriots is undeniable.

The junior justice on the Supreme Court has a number of duties created to serve as a reminder of their status as well as help them get accustomed to the job.

Gorsuch, however, was quiet for the first half of arguments in that case, while Neal Katyal argued on behalf of the petitioner.

A lawyer for the church said in an interview with The Associated Press that the case would be unaffected because Greitens' policy change does not resolve the legal issue.

"It's not unreasonable to think that Congress used the English language according to its conventions", he wrote, before proceeding to explain each verb in the statute and how the adverbial prepositional phrases modify them.

After Gorsuch used a lengthy back and forth with Landau to dissect the law, Justice Samuel Alito remarked that the exceedingly complicated statute could have come from the mind of "somebody who takes pleasure out of pulling the wings off flies".

Chief Justice John Roberts poses with Judge Neil Gorsuch at the April 10, 2017, at the new Supreme Court justice's swearing-in ceremony.

Precisely at 10 a.m Monday, Gorsuch joined his new colleagues in appearing from behind the regal burgundycurtains to take his seat.
