Harry Redknapp Announced As Birmingham City Manager

Birmingham City have appointed Harry Redknapp as their new manager following Gianfranco Zola's resignation and the former Tottenham boss insists he will work for free until the end of the season.

The move marks a surprise comeback for Redknapp more than two years since he left Queens Park Rangers, his most recent club management role.

The Blues were seventh in the division when the Italian controversially replaced former boss Gary Rowett.

The club are 20th in the Championship table, three points above the relegation zone, and Redknapp told a news conference: "It was something I thought I'll have a go at".

Redknapp has been involved in football since 1958, and has managed Bournemouth, West Ham, Southampton, Tottenham, QPR and Jordan, and has also taken in two stints at Portsmouth, where he won the FA Cup. My wife said to me 'are you mad or what?'.

Redknapp was quick to warn Birmingham fans that he is not the football wizard they need to magic their troubles away. "It's not a massive one, but I said "if I don't keep you up, I don't want paying".

In the last couple of weeks, Labour has set out policies that offer a clear and credible choice for the country. Speaking outside Number 10, the Prime Minister said the Cabinet had agreed to call an early election.

Zola, in his third management spell in England after stints at West Ham and Watford, added: "If I feel I can not help the players, why stay?" I ain't going to go in there and they are suddenly going to turn into Real Madrid. "If they don't stay up I won't stay", added Redknapp.

"I got fed up sitting around doing nothing".

Newcastle remain second, but their winless run was extended to three games after a 3-1 defeat at Ipswich.

Should Blackburn and Nottingham Forest both win on Saturday, Birmingham would slip into the bottom three before Redknapp's first match in charge, which is a trip to local rivals Villa on Sunday.

"Funny really, because I was a bit anxious about that because I didn't know any of the players - a bit like here really".

But the change of manager baffled many supporters - and results on the pitch have done nothing to win them over. "I'm looking forward to it".
