In his own words: Text of Trump's latest complaints about Canadian trade

Canada's Ambassador to the U.S. David MacNaughton reacted swiftly and harshly to Trump's criticism, saying the Canadian dairy industry isn't to blame for the woes of some American farmers.

U.S. President Donald Trump set his sights on Canada's supply-managed dairy industry.

Ottawa's envoy to Washington is downplaying talk of growing trade irritants with the US, a day after President Donald Trump called Canada out by name.

The governor recently joined Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in writing a letter to President Donald J. Trump asking him to take action against Canada for its dairy pricing program, which limits the amount of dairy products exported across the northern border.

Walker issued a joint letter to Trump with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday.

A few years back, US dairy farmers began exporting high volumes of a new class of milk - diafiltered or ultra-filtered milk, used for making cheese - to Canada.

"Simply put, the US, and for that matter, for the last of years, right around the world, there has been too much milk produced", he said."This oversupply in the U.S.is especially a challenge where there is a lack of processing capacity".

With the President looking to tinker with NAFTA, the dairy-trade issue could be a point of considerable debate.

"Our government will always defend Canada's interests", she said.

Freeland said that Canada buys more from the US than any other country, including the European Union, Mexico, China and Japan and that nine million jobs in the USA depend on trade and investment with Canada. "It's a disgrace", Trump bluntly stated during a ceremony in the Oval Office.

"There are irritants. There are always going to be irritants". "We're running out of time".

"I wasn't going to do this, but I was in Wisconsin the other day..." Tammy Baldwin offered similar pleas to Trump last week.

The U.S.is debating the idea of a border tax that could hurt certain imported products - including Canadian oil, which is a leading source of America's energy supply.

The President echoed that sentiment Thursday: "We can't let Canada or anyone else take advantage of our workers or our farmers".

But they do represent a marked departure from Trump's warm words for Canada after he met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Washington only two months ago.

Trump levelled the threat during an event at a Wisconsin factory where he unveiled his "Buy American-Hire American" executive order.

"The fact is NAFTA, whether it's Mexico or Canada, is a disaster for our country".

"[NAFTA] has been very, very bad for our companies and for our workers, and we're going to make some very big changes or we are going to get rid of NAFTA for once and for all", Mr Trump said on Tuesday.

"We're going to get together and we're going to call Canada, and we're going to say, 'What happened?' And they might give us an answer, but we're going to get the solution and not just the answer, because we know what the solution is". "We can not continue like this, believe me".

New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay told Reuters in an email that his government was "currently assessing the WTO-consistency" of Canada's dairy industry policy, and had raised concern with the Canadian government.

"I don't think farmers have anything to worry about", he says. "That will dictate how quickly negotiations go", said.

USA dairy industry groups want Trump to urge Trudeau to halt a pricing policy that has disrupted some US dairy exports and prioritize dairy market access in NAFTA renegotiation talks. His letter referenced a dairy outlook report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture which he says "clearly indicates the poor results in the U.S. sector are due U.S. and global overproduction".
