Like Trump, China Has No Good North Korea Options: QuickTake Q&A

Vice President Mike Pence (shown) met with US troops in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea on April 17 before joining South Korean Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn at a news briefing in Seoul later in the day.

The Pentagon has not discussed which missile blew up after the North's launch on Sunday from a base near Sinpo on its east coast, and the White House has said only that it was a medium-range device.

Trump has been pressuring China, North Korea's benefactor, to help defuse the situation but has also warned that the USA will settle the issue alone if other countries won't help. Those possibilities include defensive exercises or Chinese concerns over North Korea. But Pence expressed impatience with the unwillingness of the regime to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Pence, dressed in a green military jacket, said aboard the hulking USS Ronald Reagan that President Donald Trump's administration would continue to "work diligently" with allies like Japan, China and other global powers to apply economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang.

"We'll be conducting more missile tests on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis", Han told the BBC in an interview, threatening "all-out war" if the USA took any action against it.

Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearizing the peninsula. Kim must also consider the fate of Libyan leader Moammar Al-Qaddafi, who abandoned his weapons of mass destruction in 2003 only to be toppled and killed in a US -backed uprising less than a decade later.

In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking to a parliamentary session Monday, said: "Needless to say, diplomatic effort is important to maintain peace". His national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, said the USA would rely on its allies as well as Chinese leadership to resolve the issues with North Korea.

America, he said, "has created a unsafe situation in which thermonuclear war may break out at any moment on the peninsula and pose a serious threat to world peace and security". "Now is the time to stop", he said.

We condemn Pyongyang's opportunistic nuclear missile plans, which violate the numerous UN Security Council resolutions.

"We're going to abandon the failed policy of strategic patience", Pence said.

Tensions between Pyongyang and Washington have soared in recent weeks as a series of North Korean missile tests have prompted ever-more severe warnings from Trump's administration. But confrontation and conflict will not resolve the problem, and may worsen it as North Korea is nuclear and unpredictable.

China's bond with North Korea's Communist leaders formed even before Mao Zedong's decision in 1950 to send People's Liberation Army soldiers to fight alongside them in the Korean War.
