May's election pitch: 'Make me stronger' for Brexit talks

Lawmakers in the UK Parliament's House of Commons voted 522 to 13 on Wednesday in favor of a motion put forward by May for "snap" elections, with the goal of gaining a stronger mandate for Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

'I believe that at this moment of enormous national significance there should be unity here in Westminster not division, ' May told parliament.

Labour and the much smaller opposition Liberal Democrats said they would vote in favour of the early election, all but guaranteeing May's decision will be approved.

"If you look at the timetable, had the election been in 2020 we would have been coming up to the most crucial part of the negotiations, at the end of the negotiations, in what would be starting to be the run-up to a general election".

He said: "I think it is the right thing to do and we need to get on with it".

But under the timetable for the proposed general election, Parliament will be dissolved on May 3 which means there would be no House of Commons for the new MP to be elected to.

Corbyn wins only 14 per cent, according to pollster YouGov.

Earlier, May said holding an election in June, rather than as scheduled in 2020, would "deliver a more secure future for our country" as it negotiates its departure from the EU.

A large majority for the Tories would strengthen the Government's hand in negotiating a good Brexit deal and provide "strong and stable leadership in the national interest", she said.

On the issue of TV debates, Robertson asked: "Can the prime minister tell the people why she's running scared of a televised debate with Nicola Sturgeon?" "This election is about her government's failure to rebuild the economy and living standards for the majority; it is about the crisis her government has plunged our NHS into; the cuts to our children's schools which will limit the chances of every child in Britain - four million of whom now live in poverty".

Previously, May was against snap elections and vowed to not have one.

European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas made the remarks after saying his boss, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, spoke Tuesday to British Prime Minister Theresa May following her shock call for an early election.

Sterling rose to a four-month high against the US dollar after the market bet that May would strengthen her parliamentary majority, which Deutsche Bank said would be a "game-changer" for the pound.

"They want to unite together to divide our country, and we will not let them do it", she said.

The announcement marked a U-turn for May, who had repeatedly said she would not seek an early vote.

An enhanced Parliamentary majority would also make it harder, she said, for those trying to frustrate her Brexit strategy.

A survey conducted last week by the same pollster placed the gap at 21 points - a lead which has echoed a number of other companies' findings. "A prime minister who can not be trusted".
