New York City firefighter dies after fall while battling blaze

Officials say William Tolley, 42, fell from the roof of the five-story building.

Visibly emotional, Commissioner Nigro said Tolley leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old daughter.

A firefighter has died while battling a two-alarm fire in Ridgewood, the NYPD said Thursday.

As CBS2's Raegan Medgie reported, there was a solemn mood at the hospital where the firefighter's family, the FDNY chaplain, a van full of uniformed firefighters, and Mayor Bill de Blasio had arrived on Thursday afternoon. "He fell face down", a neighbor told the paper. "I just saw when the body came over. It was something like out of a movie".

Three people were also taken to Wyckoff for minor injuries.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the agency would investigate how Tolley fell.

"It is bad tragedy", Nigro said.

"He was done inspecting the building, the ladder was coming back but then it jerked".

The fire broke out around 2:20 p.m. inside a second-floor apartment within the building, according to Nigro, adding the blaze did not appear suspicious in nature.

Witness Mayer Weber, who was across the street when Tolley fell, said the side door of the bucket was open when the accident happened.

Jake Lemoda, president of the Uniform Fire Officers Association, extended his condolences to Tolley's family and co-workers.

Nigro says Tolley is the 1,147th member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty. "While the size and type of fire that this was would not typically involve the loss of life, it just goes to show how unsafe and risky the work we do is and that our members really do put their lives on the line every day".
