Nintendo sold nearly a million Switches in a single month

To put those sales in context: Nintendo said the Wii U sold 13.56 million units worldwide between its November 2012 launch and December 2016; nearly 1 million Switch units have been sold in its first month of availability within the US alone. This data means Nintendo has earned $271.8 million on Switch consoles from the USA alone in a one-month period!

It should be noted that the Switch has struggled with supply issues since launch, suggesting that if Nintendo had been able to keep up with demand, figures could have been even higher. The news outlet also attributes the success so far of the console to a game tied with it: Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Switch, the new-age home gaming console system offering additional mobility convenience to user who can easily carry it on the go, has emerged as the fastest-selling video game system in Nintendo's history. The console is also sold out in parts of Europe and Japan.

Nintendo had originally planned on selling only 2 million Nintendo Switch units worldwide for the month of March- but it looks like they may have beaten their own expectations.

The Switch wasn't Nintendo's only 2017 record breaker.

As for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the game sold 1.3 million units in America during the same period, including 925,000 copies for the Switch, and 460,000 units for the Wii U. NPD's console sales numbers are derived from incomplete, sampled data from retailers, forcing the firm to indirectly estimate sales at big retailers like Walmart. Splatoon 2 launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on July 21st 2016. Considering that the console launched on March 3, that's 28 days of potential sales - approximately 33,000 consoles were sold each day, on average.

That's right, Nintendo had more than a 100 percent attach rate for Zelda on the Switch. Nintendo says they are working to make sure everyone who wants a Switch is able to buy one and that more shipments of consoles are on the way. This is the fifth month in a row that the PS4 has led the Xbox One console in sales within the US.
