Istanbul police on Wednesday detain 16 leftist activists involved in demonstrations against the "Yes" victory in the referendum on expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers, a laywer says.

The CHP said Deputy Chairman Bulent Tezcan would present the appeal to the YSK at 2:30 p.m.

Dieter Kempf, president of the BDI lobby group, says the result of the vote "is worrying" and suggests Turkey is moving further away from European values.

On Monday, a joint report by Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) election observers claimed that an "unlevel playing field" had characterized the weekend referendum, but Turkish officials have blasted the conclusions as "biased".

"The only decision that will end the legitimacy debate and ease people's concerns about the judiciary is for the High Election Board to cancel the referendum", Tezcan said.

Unlike the Nigerian leader, the European Union on Tuesday called on Turkish authorities to launch "transparent investigations" after global observers criticised the fairness of the voting process during the recent referendum.

Mehmet Hadimi Yakupoglu, the Republican People's Party's representative to the High Electoral Board, said the party had asked the board to annul Sunday's referendum "because we weren't able to ensure election safety".

Worldwide election monitors, including from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, noted a series of irregularities, and said the decision to accept as valid ballots without official stamps undermined safeguards against fraud and was contrary to Turkish law. They found that the opposition campaign had been restricted and the media coverage was imbalanced, and that the electoral authority had unfairly changed the rules after polls had opened.

President Trump Poker Faced When it Comes to North Korea
Vice President Mike Pence says North Korea is getting the message that it needs to walk away from its "reckless" nuclear activity. South Korea's acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn called on the military and security agencies to maintain vigilance.

"The main opposition party not recognizing the results is not an acceptable thing", Yildirim said. The changes reinstate the death penalty which alone can invalidate Turkey's request for membership in the European Union.

The European Union is calling on the Turkish authorities to launch "transparent investigations" into "alleged irregularities" during last weekend's referendum on increased powers for the country's presidency.

"This is the reddest of all red lines".

U.S. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, ignored the concerns about voting irregularities and congratulated Erdogan on his referendum victory.

According to the spokesperson for the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, the call came after Turkey rejected global observers' criticism of the referendum on Sunday.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Tuesday rumours of irregularities in a referendum over the weekend were a vain effort to cast doubt on the result, after the main opposition party vowed to apply for the vote to be annulled.

He declined comment on a possible change in the result of the referendum after any recount, but said the election commission's decision to allow incorrectly or non-stamped envelopes was a definite violation of Turkish law.

Worldwide monitors said the move undermined safeguards against fraud.
