The suburban Atlanta district has drawn the attention of the political world for months, and both parties consider it the first true political referendum on Trump and congressional Republicans' performance in office. That vote is expected to be consolidated behind Handel in the runoff.

Ossoff almost pulled off a major upset win in a district comprising some of Atlanta's wealthiest, best-educated suburbs - an area that has been represented in Congress by Republicans for almost four decades.

Trump had indeed seemed aware the election was as much about him as those in the fray, and had seemed engaged in a stream of tweets through the day on Tuesday as the district voted.

JACKSON: Technically there's still two months left though, right?

Handel, Georgia's former secretary of state, won 19.8 percent of the vote. Judson Hill. Polls showed the GOP leaders closely bunched together, though Handel was considered a slight favorite.

Congratulations to Jon Ossoff's campaign for all of their hard work in tonight's landslide in the race for Georgia's 6 Congressional District.

"You're looking at the top Republican vote-getter, y'all", said Handel, to cheers, claiming her spot in the slimmed down race a little after 11 p.m.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Confident That US Is Not a Threat to Iran
Rouhani's major rivals seems be former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and an influential conservative cleric Ebrahim Raisi . The presidency would be a stepping-stone to the top, but losing an election could damage his standing.

But Trump's deep unpopularity with college-educated white voters - and growing populations of Asians and Hispanics in the area - meant he won the district by less than 2 percentage points last fall, after Mitt Romney carried it by 23 points in 2012.

Please note 18 candidates were fighting in what was called the "bloody jungle primary" to fill the seat that was vacated when President Donald Trump selected Tom Price to be his Health and Human Services Secretary. Trump himself targeted Ossoff with robocalls and a barrage of Twitter messages. Democrats are also looking to build momentum heading into next year's midterm elections.

Democrats have allowed their political party's basic infrastructure to atrophy and are now focused on rebuilding its structure, according to Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez. "That way we can cut spending and get our economy back on track and keep America safe".

Having already endured several million in attacks from national Republican outfits, Ossoff said he's ready for more.

Democrats rejoiced at Ossoff's showing. On Tuesday, however, voters in the affluent Atlanta suburbs turned out for a special election to hand a 30-year-old Democrat a whopping 30-point lead over his closest competitor.

Last Tuesday it was a special election in Kansas where the Republican candidate did just enough to win.

"The Democrats went all-in on this race", Spicer told reporters.
