Oversight chief won't seek new term

Chaffetz, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, posted a statement on his official Facebook page on 19 April 2017, announcing his decision not to seek reelection.

Chaffetz told KSL Newsradio by text Thursday that he's weighing his options and "might depart early".

Chaffetz, a conservative Republican who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2008, gained prominence as head of the committee that investigated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was US secretary of state. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins.

Chaffetz took on the chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee in 2015, following Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Kidd had raised $15,500 in recent months but was left with only $1,600 after spending most of it, according to his most recent fundraising reports. Chaffetz won 73 percent of the vote last fall.

Chaffetz frequently targeted Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.

It's possible that Chaffetz doesn't see a place for himself under the Trump administration.

French media report 2 police have been shot in Paris
Police have also issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect in the shooting, according to a document obtained by Reuters. He was shot to death after opening fire on a police van. "Police officers were deliberately targeted", Henry-Brandet added.

Chaffetz could only keep his committee chairman's gavel through 2020, due to Republican Conference term-limit rules. He says the state of Utah needs to figure out how that would work.

The job also allowed him to annoy residents of Washington, D.C., a predominantly Democratic jurisdiction, often meddling in District affairs.

After Chaffetz made his announcement, a source close to McMullin told Independent Journal Review that McMullin is "considering running in 2018" but still hasn't made a decision on how he will proceed.

Some are speculating that Chaffetz bowed out early because of two well-funded challengers, both first-time political candidates: Democrat Kathryn Allen, a physician, and Republican Damian Kidd, a lawyer. I have the full support of Speaker Ryan to continue as Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Chaffetz, a Republican who has represented Utah's Third Congressional District since 2008, wrote in a Facebook post that he would return to the private sector. But Chaffetz could also be taking a hiatus from the political scene before a gubernatorial run in 2020, something he reportedly expressed interest in a year ago.
