The police union said one of the officers was killed, while the other officer was seriously injured.

However a shooting of a police officer on the Champs Elysees earlier this year was blamed on organized crime rather than terrorism. The BBC adds that the incident is believed to only involve one gunman, who has reportedly been "taken down".

The attacker, who was reportedly in a vehicle, opened fire on a police auto at a red light, killing an officer inside.

Many police vehicles can be seen on the avenue that passes numerous city's most iconic landmarks.

The police are said to have been severely injured in gunfire according to French television station BFMTV and another bystander seems also to have been injured.

A Reuters reporter saw a helicopter flying low over central Paris, apparently part of a follow-up police operation.

Police have advised the public to steer clear of the area.

The attack comes three days before the first round of France's tense presidential election. Security is high preceding the vote after police said they arrested two men Tuesday in what they described as a thwarted terror attack.
