Senate moves ahead on marijuana legalization

"We're in negotiations with the Senate, to get the Senate bill and the House bill reconciled".

The House's bill would raise the gas tax by two cents a year for five years, with all the money going to existing roads, while the Senate's bill would raise the gas tax two cents a year for six years.

"The bill that is before the Senate tomorrow is just a straight-up gas tax increase with no reform", Climer said. But his bill doesn't say anything about "birth certificate sex" or how bathrooms are regulated.

There was more evidence Monday that some of the more controversial gun rights bills filed in the Florida Legislature this year are unlikely to become law. They anxious it creates policy when there is no guarantee the Legislature will pass adequate funding to cover it as the House and Senate continue to hammer out the 2018-2019 state budget before the legislative session ends next month.

The governor and his staff will come to conference committee meetings, when the House and Senate versions of the bills are reconciled, to advocate for his proposals.

The House Committee on State Affairs is scheduled to hear public testimony as soon as the low-chamber adjourns for the day.

Supporters of the bathroom bills claim all they are doing is trying to protect women and school girls from predators.

The bill also will allow for reciprocity agreements between West Virginia and its medical marijuana border states. The measure passed the House 50-14 on March 21.

The bill's sponsor, Houston Republican Rep. Dan Huberty, says it's not a full school finance overhaul but will lay the groundwork for larger changes that must be made in coming years.

The House is back in session at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and will spend hours grinding through amendments before expected passage of a $1.6 billion plan to begin overhauling the state school finance system.

The amended version of SB 719 now heads to the Senate floor.

Sen. Don Huffines' bill has been listed on the "local and consent" calendar, making it eligible for passage with minimal debate. The students would have to demonstrate grade-level proficiency in order to participate. A similar measure is pending in the House.

"We appreciate the collaborative of Chair Bileca and Chair Diaz in shaping good policy through partnership with school board members, and their commitment to allocate funding around what is best for students, '" said FCSBM President Shawn Frost.

Civil liberties groups pointed out the law would still apply to school public districts across the state.
