Tuesday, as a part of a state wide initiative, The State Fire Marshall partnered with Vision 2020, a non profit organization to distribute 204 smoke detectors in the county and city.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is giving out more than 300 smoke alarms.
The Evansville Fire Department says people need to make sure their smoke alarms are working so they can help save lives.
State fire coordinator Brad Smith says the free alarms will be given to homes that are considered at higher risk, including low-income households or those with children or older residents.

"In the past 10 years Oktibbeha County has had 21 fire deaths out of those 21 fire deaths 15 of them had no working smoke alarms. The Red Cross will install up to five detectors per house - on each floor and outside bedrooms".
"We're going through all the neighborhoods in the Ogden area and our focus is on providing them with the opportunity to receive a free smoke alarm for their homes to protect their families".
The day will begin at 9 a.m. Hoffman, an active member with the Red Cross for a number of years, is pictured installing a smoke detector in a resident's trailer.
