Trump celebrates after his unpopularity puts red seats in play

A political newcomer who thrilled Democrats with a strong finish in a Georgia congressional race - despite attacks by President Donald Trump - will face an experienced Republican candidate in a June runoff election for a district long dominated by the party.

Handel picked up just under 20 percent of the vote in the first round of the Georgia special election on Tuesday, earning her the Republican spot in the runoff against Ossoff, who got 48.1 percent.

While Karen Handel, a Republican, came in a distant second with 37,993 votes which represent 19.8% of the votes in the special election for a U.S. House seat in a Republican-dominated section of Georgia. Johnny Isakson. Price won 62 percent of the vote in November, and Democrats pointed to Ossoff's success in cutting into the GOP's most recent showing as evidence the Democrat can win the runoff. "If we can get over 50 percent in this district, we know we can do that statewide and around the country", Porter said, mocking Republican assertions that Ossoff failed Tuesday by falling short of an outright primary victory.

The race was for the seat previously held by Republican Tom Price, who now serves as Trump's Health and Human Services Secretary.

Democrat Jon Ossoff didn't win a special election for a Georgia congressional seat Tuesday night.

And as much as we can extrapolate from one single Atlanta suburb, Ossoff's near-win portends Democratic strength going into the 2018 congressional midterms.

Trump in the final days of the campaign appeared to perceive the damage an Ossoff win would do to a presidency scoring historically low approval ratings and with an agenda that has been stymied by the courts and Congress. The election that was seen as an early referendum on Trump, threw a scare into Republicans - as the president tweeted several times blasting Ossoff. "Glad to be of help!"

WTI was trading 30 cents lower at $52.35 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 10:34am London time on Tuesday. Gasoline stocks also posted a counter-seasonal build of 1.4 MMbbl.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters Wednesday that Trump will campaign for Handel "if needed", saying Trump is prepared to do "everything he can to maintain majorities to further the party".

Republican Karen Handel has kept her distance from Trump.

Mr Ossoff grew up in the district and says he will move back if he wins.

Trump's approval rating has not topped 50 percent since he took office on January 20, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.

He also recorded robocalls warning voters that Ossoff would derail the Republican agenda if elected. "I do not think that gay relationships are-they are not what God intended" and that she also opposed adoption by gay parents.

"There is no doubt this is already a victory for the ages", Ossoff told his supporters, praising them for a campaign that has collected more than $8.3 million, most of it from well beyond Georgia.
