Trump orders review of Iran nuclear deal; Tillerson says Iran complying

Asked at a news briefing if Trump had chose to pull out of the 2015 deal, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the 90-day inter-agency review, announced on Tuesday, would make recommendations on the path forward.

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) said Wednesday that President Trump could effectively rip up the accord, by violating its terms on sanctions.

Tillerson's hastily arranged statement before cameras at the State Department reflected the competing forces pulling at the Trump administration as it develops its policy toward Iran.

Tillerson did not say how long the review would take. The White House will not, he said, adopt President Obama's failed approach of "strategic patience".

Earlier on April 19, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said in Riyadh that Iran is playing a destabilizing role in the Middle East. These include Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who is a former chief executive of ExxonMobil and whose voice has been reinforced by that of many other major corporations.

In his letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan making the certification, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrote that the Trump administration was in the midst of an interagency review of the nuclear deal that will evaluate whether suspension of sanctions related to Iran under terms of the nuclear agreement "is vital to the national security interests of the United States".

After receiving billions in cash assets and other economic relief, Iran invested heavily in its military and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, which continues to meddle in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and a host of other countries.

Despite the sanctions relief, Iran remains on the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism for its support of anti-Israel groups and is still subject to non-nuclear sanctions, including for alleged human rights abuses and for its backing of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government.

"An unchecked Iran", Tillerson said, has the potential to take the same path as North Korea "and take the world along with it".

"A comprehensive Iran policy requires we address all of the threats posed by Iran and it is clear there are many", he added.

Things are a little more tense when it comes to whether Trump will fulfill his pledge to get rid of the Iran nuclear weapons deal that was worked out under the administration of President Barack Obama.

The Trump administration certified that Iran is in compliance with the deal it signed with the world powers to rein in its nuclear program.

On another subject, as he stood alongside Italian Premier Paolo Gentiloni at the White House, Trump voiced optimism that the USA had successfully enlisted China to try to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program.

"It is their habit to unsettle people and nations", Tillerson said.
