Trump says Iran violating 'spirit' of nuclear deal

"An unchecked Iran has the potential to travel the same path as North Korea, and take the world along with it", top USA diplomat Rex Tillerson declared on Wednesday (19 April) just hours after the State Department confirmed that Tehran is complying with the terms of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

Tillerson, seeking to reinforce the idea that the USA is forcefully countering Iran's destabilising behaviour in the Middle East, also described Tehran as a "leading state sponsor of terror".

Iranian hardliners have regularly criticized Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani for their role in negotiating the 2015 nuclear deal, which they see as capitulation to Western powers.

He accused the country of "alarming and ongoing provocations that export terror and violence, destabilising more than one country at a time".

In announcing a broad review of Iran policy the Trump administration has not jettisoned the nuclear deal.

The Iran deal "represents the same failed approach to the past that brought us to the current imminent threat that we face from North Korea", Mr Tillerson told reporters. In other areas, however, the Trump administration has appeared poised to take a far more aggressive line against Tehran.

The EU encouraged the FCC to rethink this proposal to consider how it might affect European companies. The vote was 2 to 1, with commissioner Mignon Clyburn offering a scathing review of the policy.

The nuclear agreement, negotiated during Barack Obama's presidency, placed limitations on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions against Iran.

His comments mark the latest foreign policy intervention by the new United States administration, who have set their sights on North Korea, Syria and Russian Federation in recent weeks.

Tillerson's notice to Congress was part of a 90-day process in which the president has to certify that Iran is complying with the nuclear accord.

As the UN's top negotiator on Syria, Staffan de Mistura, prepared to hold talks with the Russian deputy foreign minister in Geneva on Monday without United States involvement, Mr Trump hosted the Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni at the White House.

The administration's mix of rhetoric and action - such as the missile strike on Syria's Shayrat airbase earlier this month - has brought a degree of grudging respect from critics who were anxious that Mr Trump's unconventional approach meant the USA would retreat from the world stage.
