South Korea has successfully test launched a new, homegrown 800-kilometer-range ballistic missile.

Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme is likely to dominate when US President Donald Trump meets China's leader Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida Thursday, their first face to face meeting.

Rex Tillerson, the USA secretary of state, confirmed that North Korea had launched "yet another" intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Council members "expressed their utmost concern" about North Korea's "highly destabilising behavior and flagrant and provocative defiance of the Security Council".

Trump wants China to do more to exert its economic influence over unpredictable Pyongyang to restrain its nuclear and missile programmes.

North Korea published photos after the test that demonstrated "a very challenging technology for us" to detect before launch, he said.

The U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement around the same time that initial assessments showed the missile was a mid-ranged KN-15.

The missile test ended in failure when the rocket spun out of control and plunged into the sea, a senior U.S. defense official said.

THAAD is a missile defense shield created to intercept short and medium range missiles.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that the U.S. government will not release any more comment on North Korea's launch of another intermediate range ballistic missile.

US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster agreed in a telephone call with his South Korean counterpart on the need to proceed with the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile system in South Korea after Wednesday's launch.

Citing an unnamed source from the U.S. Department of Defense, AP wrote that the "rocket spun out of control and plunged into the ocean in a fiery crash".

The North is believed to be developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that could hit the United States and its leader, Kim Jong Un, has vowed to test-launch one at any time.

Japan's Kyodo News agency reported that Tokyo would continue its prohibition of all trade between Japan and North Korea for two more years and ban all North Korean ships from entering Japanese ports.

North Korean state media said the "Pukguksong-2" missile is a surface-to-surface missile that can carry nuclear warheads.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Thursday that he and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed in a telephone call that North Korea's latest ballistic missile launch was "a unsafe provocation and a serious threat".

The U.S. responded with a cryptic message of its own. North Korea carried out two nuclear tests a year ago.
