The United States is now reviewing the U.N.'s 16 peacekeeping operations to assess costs and effectiveness and USA ambassador Nikki Haley told the council Tuesday that thanks to recent elections in Haiti "the political context is right" for a new and smaller mission. The current mission has just over 1,000 individual police and 11 police units.
Sandra Honore - a diplomat from Trinidad who has headed the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti, MINUSTAH since July 2013 - says the UN will keep tabs on progress in the country even after the mission shuts down.
A Wednesday report by the Associated Press sheds further light on the extensive child rape problem that exists within the United Nations peacekeeping forces.
Some of the peacekeepers in the Sri Lankan contingent were based near the former resort. In 2016, the United Nations mission in the Central African Republic became embroiled in reports that more than 100 people had faced sexual abuse at the hands of peacekeepers.
The mission started in 2004 amid unrest following the removal of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Haitian lawyer Mario Joseph has been trying to get compensation for victims of a deadly cholera strain linked to Nepalese peacekeepers that killed an estimated 10,000 people.
She cited the example of a sex ring allegedly run by Sri Lankan peacekeepers in Haiti - they reportedly lured hungry teenage boys and girls by offering them snacks and cookies.

The U.N. resolution reiterates the need for security in the country to be accompanied by efforts to address "the country's extreme vulnerability to natural disasters".
"Peacekeepers do fantastic work but they are very expensive and they should be used only when needed".
Haiti suffered a two-year political crisis until the recent election and inauguration of Moise as president.
However earlier this month, Sri Lanka's military spokesperson said that 200 Sri Lankan peacekeepers would leave for Mali to join the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in May.
And the country is still struggling to recover from the massive Hurricane Matthew in October that wreaked more than $2 billion in damage, killing hopes for an economic revival through agriculture.
A Chinese envoy said Tuesday that China hopes the new Haitian government will embark on a path of development suited to its national conditions.
