With Panamagate verdict, Sharif now at 'mercy' of Pak Army

Security has dramatically improved in the last two years, overall confidence in the economy is growing, and the military, which has ruled the country for more than half its history, appears to have reached an accommodation with Sharif's civilian government.

Presenting its 549-page judgment amid tight security in the capital Islamabad, the court ordered a joint investigation team be formed to look into allegations around three of Sharif's four children using offshore companies to buy properties in London. "If Aitzaz Ahsan stood there and argued against them [the Sharif family], then the decision might have been different". The family submitted a letter from a Qatari prince claiming that the flats were bought through investment in the 1980s from the Sharif family into the prince's family business.

"He should resign from his position on moral grounds", said Pervaz Ahmad, an Islamabad resident.

Sharif's daughter and his presumptive political heir, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, posted a photo on Twitter of the family welcoming the court's decision.

"We will cooperate fully with the investigation, and seek to clear whatever doubts are left", defence minister Khawaja Asif told AFP.

The high court launched an investigation into the offshore wealth of Sharif's family late previous year after The Panama Papers linked them to offshore businesses.

The JIT would report to the court after every two weeks and would complete the proceedings in 60 days.

Pakistani PM must appear before new investigative team, court rules
According to Reuters, protesters nearby were chanting "Go Nawaz, Go Nawaz", urging the PM to gracefully exit his political office. The two judges ruled against PM Nawaz Sharif , whereas the other three were in favour of forming a JIT.

Opposition figures have accused Sharif of failing to explain the source of the offshore money and lying to parliament.

Sharif's ruling PML-N party insists the wealth was acquired legally through family businesses in Pakistan and the Gulf.

Has refused to order his removal from office, saying there was insufficient evidence.

Almeida said the prime minister's main vulnerability was the continuing electricity crisis, which he had been unable to solve.

Pervez Musharraf revealed that the verdict given by Supreme Court reveals that the Panamagate is not over yet. "There is no clean chit for the prime minister, but for the time being he has been saved from being disqualified".

"We have been vindicated as Prime Minister had previous year asked to set up a probe commission to investigate Panama leaks scandal", said Khawaja Asif, defence minister and close ally of Sharif.

The leader of the opposition Pakistan Movement for Justice party said in a statement the ruling would "change the dynamics of politics in Pakistan".
