Betty Shelby: Tulsa Cop Who Shot Unarmed Terence Crutcher Acquitted by Jury

A jury acquitted Tulsa Police Officer Betty Jo Shelby, right, in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, Terence Crutcher, on Wednesday.

Jurors deliberated for nine hours after closing arguments. Then, seemingly showing no aggression to officers on a video shot from a chopper, Crutcher, unarmed was shot to death at his vehicle.

The family of an unarmed black man killed by a white Oklahoma police officer has called on Tulsa city leadership to block the officer from returning to her job. Shelby says that she told Crutcher numerous times to stay still with his hands up. Shelby asked Crutcher if the vehicle was his, but only mumbled to himself and didn't respond, according to an affidavit.

Shelby's attorneys have said Crutcher refused Shelby's commands to lie down during a two-minute period before police cameras recorded the shooting. They noted Mr Crutcher had his hands in the air and was not combative - part of which was confirmed by police video taken from a dashboard camera and helicopter that showed Mr Crutcher walking away from Ms Shelby, hands held above his head. Shelby was the first of several officers who responded to the call about an abandoned SUV in the middle of the road.

"This verdict does not alter the course on which we are adamantly set", he said. She added that Crutcher "loved God" and would sing at church every week.

The family accused police of attempting to "demonise" Mr Crutcher over the drug possession to deflect attention from the fact that there was no gun in his vehicle. She also criticized police because they didn't immediately provide aid to her brother after he was shot.

After the verdict, Officer Shelby exited the building and ran toward a waiting vehicle. "We're trained to stop a threat, and by all indications, he was a threat". Shelby testified Monday, saying quote "if you hesitate, if you delay, you die". Shelby, who is white, has insisted she did so out of fear he was reaching for a weapon inside his vehicle. That remark was likely related to evidence that her brother lay bleeding in the street before anyone approached to help.

Protests over Crutchers death and Shelbys verdict have been peaceful.

"Prosecutors said Shelby acted out of fear when she shot Terence Crutcher on September 16", Matt Trotter of member station KWGS reports From Tulsa.

Crutcher's sister, Tiffany Crutcher, told reporters the verdict was a "tough pill" to swallow.

For example, an autopsy found PCP in Crutcher's system at the time of his shooting, according to the toxicology report released by the Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner's Office. The defense also brought up law enforcement experts who had encounters with Crutcher dating back to 1995.

A toxicology report revealed Crutcher was on two hallucinogenic drugs, including PCP. "It doesn't matter that he's been raised right", she said. "Don't make this happen,"' Shelby told "60 Minutes".

"In spite of anything that Terence may have done in his past that may have a negative turn to it, it does not justify murder", he said.
