Chelsea Manning released from prison after seven years

September 23, 2014: Manning sues in federal court in the District of Columbia, asking a judge to order the Defense Department to provide hormone therapy and other treatment for her gender identity condition.

Earlier this week Manning released a statement saying that she now can imagine a future as Chelsea.

To facilitate her return to civilian life, a program called "Hugs for Chelsea" has raised more than $100,000 so that she can find housing and private health insurance.

Over the years, Manning, who has a Twitter account run by her supporters, has been vocal about her own imprisonment, gender transition, and current events.

The Oklahoma native had a hard childhood.

March 13, 2011: Manning is held in solitary confinement 23 hours a day, stripped naked each night and given a suicide-proof smock to wear to bed. "She wouldn't be charged again for the same offenses, but if she committed a new crime, the military would still have jurisdiction over her". Her imprisonment was longer than any whistleblower in USA history.

While Manning can not physically tweet from Fort Leavenworth, she is in editorial charge of her Twitter handle as well as her website, Luminairity.com, per her legal team.

Chelsea Manning left a military prison in Ft. "After so many years of government control over her body and gender, I know she [Manning] is eager to grow her hair, express her gender and negotiate decisions on her own terms", said Stranglio.

She will now assist with a documentary about her life.

Ahead of Manning's release, a group of musicians released a compilation album with all proceeds to go to the former soldier as she starts a new life. The 32-track album also features songs by frequent Bruce Springsteen collaborator Tom Morello's acoustic solo project The Nightwatchman, founding Sonic Youth singer/guitarist Thurston Moore and a variety of others artists.

Manning has also surreptitiously become an icon for transgender activists. Bradley Manning, the USA soldier sentenced to 35 years for leaking secret documents.

The Department of Defense has repeatedly declined to discuss Manning's treatment in prison.

Confirming Manning's release on Wednesday, the spokesperson said: "I can confirm Manning has been released from The United States Disciplinary Barracks, Ft. He then said 'the President has commuted her sentence to time served plus 120 days and will announce it in two minutes.' I think I screamed 'Oh my God!'"
