Chris Cornell, Soundgarden frontman, dies aged 52

Musician Chris Cornell, 52, was found dead on Wednesday night in his hotel room at MGM Grand hotel and casino in Detroit hours after he had performed in town.

KEXP will have a tribute and moment of silence for Cornell outside its studios at 5 p.m. Thursday. When officers went to the room they found Chris Cornell laying in his bathroom, unresponsive and he had passed away.

"I was asleep and my phone was jumping and one of our mutual friends - they were crying and bawling - and said "Nile you won't believe this" and he said "Chris is dead", I said 'Chris who?'"

"I'm shocked, I don't even know how to deal with it". "But it's a devastating loss".

In the Mount Rushmore of '90s rock bands, there's Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. Woody added that Cornell's wife, Vicky, called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell. The band tweeted Wednesday night a quote from Cornell: "What I look forward to the most...is the camaraderie". It's great to still be having new experiences with the same group of guys - because we invented a band together, and kind of co-invented a genre of music. The six dates left on the band's 18-city tour included Pointfest in St. Louis, hosted by radio station 105.7 The Point. Released in 1991, it spawned the singles "Jesus Christ Pose", "Rusty Cage" and "Outshined".

Soundgarden - also comprised of Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd - split in 1997 and reunited in 2010, with their last record being "King Animal" in 2012.

Writing on Twitter, Jimmy said: "RIP Chris Cornell Incredibly Talented Incredibly Young Incredibly Missed".

In interviews, Cornell discussed his past struggles with alcohol and the impact of his friends' deaths from substance abuse. But he said in 2007 that he had been sober since checking himself into rehab in 2002.
