Make sure you register in the next three days, and don't miss out on having your say. The general election takes place on June 8, when the Island will choose a new member of parliament after Andrew Turner stood down in disgrace following an outcry over comments made about homosexuality. The deadline to register to vote is May 22. Numbers tripled to more than 100,000 for the 2015 general election and then again more than doubled for the referendum, with around 264,000 registered at the end of previous year.

In England and Wales, you can only vote when you turn 18. But Scottish teenagers must also wait until they are 18 to vote in elections to the United Kingdom and European Parliaments.

Registering takes five minutes and you need your national insurance number.

You can also use the online form to update your name, address or other details on the electoral register, change your voting preferences or change whether you are on the open register.

Am I already registered to vote? .

You will need your passport if you're a British citizen living overseas.

Due to the short time available between now and election day, the Electoral Commission has advised that Britons living overseas who are registered to vote should apply for a proxy vote at this stage, due to the short time-frame.

You can not vote if you have been legally excluded from doing so.
