DeVos Budget Brings Class War to the Classroom

Trump and De Vos education cuts “reckless and wrong”

It's not official until next week, but The Washington Post revealed that Donald Trump's first education budget contains, as they put it, "Deep cuts to public school programs in pursuit of school choice".

Cuts would affect college work-study programs, public-service loan forgiveness, funding for mental health programs, and advanced coursework, with the elimination of at least 22 programs. For example, it would eliminate over $700 million in Perkins Loans for disadvantaged students.

A program that forgives the debt of government and non-profit workers after 10 years would be eliminated, as Trump hinted at in a campaign speech last October.

DeVos never attended public school.

The Department of Education will allegedly dedicate $1 billion of the $10.6 billion cut to encouraging public schools to establish policies enabling school choice.

Noelle Ellerson Ng, associate executive director of AASA, the School Superintendents Association, told Education Week that Congress rejected the idea of allowing Title I funds to follow students to the school of their choice when lawmakers passed the Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015.

After-school programs servicing 1.6 million students and class-size reduction/teacher training would be reduced by $1.2 billion and $2.1 billion, respectively. Grants for career and technical education would be cut by $168 million; paired with the cuts to college financial aid, such cuts will drastically reduce options for a significant number of students who wish to pursue either a university degree or a career in the skilled trades.

Title I funds, which help poor children, and special education funding will neither be increased nor cut by the budget. He said he hopes the Trump administration, if it chooses to eliminate the program, will grandfather in those like him who've been paying into the program for years.

Betsy DeVos, billionaire Republican donor and Trump's Secretary of Education, is an advocate of charter schools. However, high-poverty schools are likely to receive fewer dollars than in the past because of a new law that allows states to use up to 7 percent of Title I money for school improvement before distributing it to districts. Current funding is not "portable" to public schools of choice, according to Education Week. Dismantling what we've variously described as an "utterly corrupt educational status quo" or a "government behemoth" wasn't going to be done with the seal of approval of the teachers unions (National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers) or Department of Education bureaucracy, but President Trump and Secretary DeVos were dead set on making it happen anyway.

In other words, more money for religious schools.
