Fiat Chrysler seeks diesel emission certification from EPA

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV filed a proposed fix to its diesel engines that the carmaker predicts will resolve negotiations with the Justice Department and other US regulators. FCA - the automaker behind Jeep, Ram and four other US brands - said today that it filed an application with the EPA and California Air Resources Board for emissions certification on diesel versions of the 2017 Ram 1500 and Grand Cherokee.

M - Amid investigations into alleged emissions violations from its 3.0-liter diesel V-6, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said it's asked regulators to greenlight the sale of the engine in certain model-year 2017 vehicles with updated emissions software.

FCA said Friday it believes the modifications that is proposed to its disputed diesels "should help facilitate a prompt resolution to ongoing discussions with the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and other governmental agencies". But FCA says any litigation would be "counterproductive" to its talks with the EPA.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan, company said that if its application is approved by the agencies, vehicle owners would be able to get the software updates at their dealerships, but did not give a time frame.

FCA shares fell 1 percent to $10.44 in midday trading. Gasoline versions of both models are now on sale, but the diesels (or any vehicle, for that matter) can't be sold in the US without emissions certification, and it's unclear how long the EPA will take to approve or reject FCA's application.

Flynn not cooperating in Russian probe: GOP Senator
The Senate committee reportedly is after documents in the retired lieutenant general's possession relating to Russian Federation . Burr told reporters Thursday that Flynn's lawyer said Flynn would not comply with the subpoena, which the panel later corrected.

The move follows reports this week that indicated the company could face a federal lawsuit if no agreement is reached soon on resolving alleged Clean Air Act violations involving previous year diesel models.

Dan Carder, director of a renowned vehicle emissions program at West Virginia University, said a diesel Ram pickup tested by the group produced up to 20 times more harmful nitrogen oxides on the road than under controlled conditions in a lab.

A 2013 study by Carder's team set off a chain of events that exposed Volkswagen's use of illegal software to hide excess emissions in diesel cars. On Wednesday, the European Union's executive arm filed a formal complaint against the Italian government for allowing Fiat Chrysler to sell cars created to evade emissions tests.

An EPA spokeswoman declined to comment, citing the agency's policy to avoid discussing the certification status of vehicles not yet approved for sale. Eventually the German automaker paid more than $22 billion in legal settlements and fines stemming from the cheating.
