Football divers facing retrospective FA bans from next season

The new offence - "Successful Deception of a Match Official" - will come into force at the start of the 2017-18 season with those suspected of cheating subjected to trial by video. If they are unanimous in believing a player deceived an official, the sanction will be a two-match ban.

A three-man panel, made up of one former referee, one ex-manager and one ex-player, will independently review footage each weekend looking for cases of simulation.

Robert Snodgrass apologised for going down without contact to earn a penalty for Hull City against Crystal Palace, while Dele Alli won a debated spot-kick in Tottenham Hotspur's 5-0 win over Swansea City.

However, recent moves to introduce goal-line technology and video assistant referees indicate that even Federation Internationale de Football Association realises match officials need more help and supporters want better decisions.

Calls for divers to be banned retrospectively have grown in recent years.

The FA explains that when there is "clear and overwhelming evidence" that a player has deceived a referee, he could be banned.

The FA confirmed that a retrospective ban will be delivered if the simulation play leads to a penalty, red card, or straight dismissal of an opponent, upon review of the play.

The FA is trying to kick diving out of English soccer and the Premier League.

As evidence, he rattled off an extensive list of amicus briefs submitted in favor of striking down Trump's order. It was the first federal appeals court ruling that determined gay marriage bans were unconstitutional.

The retrospective approach works both ways though.

The FA also announced it has passed reforms it proposed in March, following criticism over the way it is run.

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch had said the FA could lose £30m-£40m of public funding if it did not modernise.

It might be a tad overdue but the FA is finally clamping down on simulation.

.

In an FA statement, Clarke said: "This is a significant moment and a very positive step".

New Football Association rules mean that footballers in England can be punished for "diving" during a match, even after the game has finished.

The player can then either acknowledge guilt and accept the punishment offered by the compliance officer, or appeal.
