Ailes wife Elizabeth issued a statement saying her husband had passed away at the age of 77.

Ailes, who reshaped television news over five decades in the TV and entertainment industry, was 77. In his 2013 biography, Ailes, who had hemophilia, discussed his inevitable death saying that "I've been prepared to face death all of my life".

Ailes died after a fall at his Palm Beach, Florida, home on May 10 caused bleeding on the brain, the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office said.

The Fox co-founder, a consultant to Republican presidents and a central figure in the conservative USA political movement, was ousted from the network in July a year ago after a sexual harassment lawsuit from former news host Gretchen Carlson.

Ailes denied accusations that he built a culture at Fox that encouraged harassment, after a lawsuit by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson prompted other women at the network, including high-profile anchor Megyn Kelly, to step forward with similar claims.

While many on social media are coming together to mourn Ailes, there are those who are looking back on him with distaste due to his sexual harassment history.

In an op-ed for USA Today, former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly lauded Ailes for his vision in creating a channel where "conservatives like him were heard loud and clear", adding that it's "a very good thing for the republic".

Ailes' death was briefly addressed Thursday morning on Fox News' "Fox and Friends".

Ailes, an OH native, began his television career in the early 1960s as a producer at The Mike Douglas Show in Cleveland, and went onto serve as media consultant for several Republican presidents, including Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

This attack-dog style served him well when, at 27, Ailes wrangled a job with Nixon, then vying for a political comeback in the 1968 presidential race. He was also reported to have advised President Donald Trump in the 2016 campaign. For over 20 years, he turned Fox News into a media empire and many Republicans watched their lineup non-stop. But Ailes was also a "tragic figure" who was brought down by "the male libido", said Simon. "And may he rest in peace", the lawmaker told CNN's Chris Cuomo Thursday on "New Day".

Fox News and 21st Century Fox executive chairman Rupert Murdoch called Ailes "a brilliant broadcaster (who) played a huge role in shaping America's media over the last thirty years" in a statement. Despite Ailes' denials of the allegations, he was forced to resign in the aftermath.
