Speaking alongside France's new President Emmanuel Macron, who made his first official trip overseas to Berlin, Chancellor Angela Merkel said the two countries agreed to work closely on a "road map" of reforms to make the European Union and the Eurozone stronger in the coming years.

Mrs. Merkel pointed out the EU depended on France being strong, and that she and Mr. Macron had a "joint conviction that we are not only going to deal with the British exit from the European Union, but we also need to deepen the EU".

Pope Francis has sent new French President Emmanuel Macron his congratulations and a few words of encouragement.

This year, unemployment in Germany, Europe's biggest economy, should be around 4.0 percent, compared with 9.9 percent in France, according to the latest European Commission forecasts.

Party leader Martin Schulz had predicted a victory there would make him the next German chancellor - but the victory for Mrs Merkel's party will now give her a boost as she seeks a fourth term.

Macron also said he was opposed to mutualising "old debt" between eurozone countries but he was open to sharing future burdens.

As for Brexit, with divorce talks expected to begin shortly after June 8 elections in Britain, it is unlikely that will be much of a brake on the Merkel-Macron duo, analysts said.

Macron wants to create a common Euro zone budget, parliament and finance minister.

Trump denies ever urging Comey to back off Flynn investigation
With those words from Peter Baker of The New York Times , the East Room of the White House grew quiet, but for the shutter clicks of the cameras.

"(The story about Trump and Russia) probably is playing out as a weaker dollar on the view that Trump may not be around long enough to deliver his tax reform, which is at least partially priced into the dollar", said RBC Capital Markets currency strategist Adam Cole, in London.

"We each represent the interests of our own countries, but the interests of Germany are naturally closely tied to the interests of France", Merkel said, as cited by AP.

"The whole world is changing, she said, while Macron said: "There are no taboos for us here".

Macron addressed a source of German concern by saying that he had "never defended [the idea of] Eurobonds or the mutualisation of existing debt in the eurozone" because it would make some countries less responsible.

The UK had notably pushed for more restrictions on its borders while London's calls for amending the European Union treaties have been rebuffed, contributing to the outcome of the Brexit vote.

"We need more pragmatism, less bureaucracy and a Europe that protects our citizens", he added.

In keeping with Macron's independent centrist line and goal of reshaping French politics, his ministers include both Socialists and conservatives.

Back in Paris, there was some unhappiness among Socialists, many who had flocked to Macron's side to thwart Marine le Pen, with his choice of the right-wing Philippe. Some commentators pointed to the 2005 federal election, called by SPD Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder after losing NRW, where Merkel squandered a hefty poll lead to win by just a whisker.
